NEW YORK CITY — Swann Galleries’ December auction of maps & atlases, natural history and color plate books, featuring a “Mapping of America” session, achieved $1.27 million, including the buyer’s premium. The top lot among the 554 lots was William Faden’s The North American Atlas, with 42 engraved maps, London, 1777, that attained $341,000, going to a dealer.
Alex Clausen, Swann Galleries’ Maps & Atlases, Natural History & Color Plate Books specialist said, “Overall, this was the highest-grossing sale for the Maps & Atlases department. The sale of Faden’s North American Atlas for $341,000 reinforces Swann Galleries’ position as the foremost place to buy and sell atlases and American cartographic material.”
