NEW YORK CITY — Swann Auction Galleries’ February 29 Vintage Posters & Graphic Design auction offered works from many desirable categories, including “an exceptional, curated selection of images relating to skiing, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, travel and advertising.” Leading the nearly 340-lot sale was the rare 1907 “Bil-Bol” advertisement by Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931). The poster features a reimagining of Kyllikki from the 1835 epic Kalevala, as the allegorical nude female in the fiery red car appears to be the driver’s captive. While it is not known for certain who commissioned the work, it has become one of the most famous Finnish advertisements and was featured on a postage stamp in 2006. The virtuous bidder won the framed 34½-by-44½-inch poster for $62,500, including the buyer’s premium ($40/60,000). A comprehensive review of the auction will be in a forthcoming issue.
