PITTSFIELD, MASS. — The Collector’s Auction at Fontaine’s Auction Gallery took place on June 25, showcasing large and small-scale objects including carousel animals, a Coca-Cola vending machine and other souvenirs of leisure time in the pre-digital era. The victor of the auction pulled seniority among a catalog of mostly Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century lots; a late Eighteenth Century countertop tobacconist figure, carved and painted in a full-body figure of a Native American holding a spear. Standing at 44½ inches high, the unusual, striking form sold for $20,000 among similarly impressive top lots. More on this sculpture and its peers in a later issue.
