PITTSFIELD, MASS. — Fontaine’s Auction Gallery conducted its Fine & Decorative Arts sale on January 28, presenting more than 550 lots of furniture, fine art, collectibles and jewelry. Tiffany Studios glass filled a significant amount of that number with the apotheosis being a “Jesus in a Field of Lilies” window, circa 1898, that rose to $237,500, nearly doubling its high estimate of $80/120,000. From a private collection in Danbury, Conn., the monumental window measured almost 10 feet high and over 7 feet wide in its frame, giving the image of Jesus Christ walking on water with a field of lilies in the background “a spectacular natural and supernatural visual presence.” Combining leaded, plated and “confetti” glass, one can imagine the effect this window would have when illuminated by sunlight. More on this and other glowing lots coming soon.
