SPARKS, MD. – Decorated with the cobalt figure of a leaping frog, a New York Stoneware Company jug of circa 1875 jumped to the front of the pack at Crocker Farm’s October 22 sale of American pottery. The auction’s cover lot more than doubled low estimate to bring $74,750. Fort Edward, N.Y., potter George Prouty inscribed the name of his young son Frank Prouty on the 17½ inch tall presentation piece that has figured prominently in several major collections and exhibitions. Among selections of Southern pottery, an inscribed Edgefield District, South Carolina stoneware jug by the African American potter Dave achieved $46,000. The jug’s signature, early date of circa 1825-1835 and rare double-handled form contributed to the appeal of this 14½ inch tall piece. Watch for a full review of the sale in a future edition.
