NEW YORK CITY — Swann’s March 2 Fine Books & Autographs sale included numerous presidential letters and autographs, along with important first editions of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century literature. Finishing at $30,000, a full-page letter written by George Washington while president discussed the sale of land he owned in Pennsylvania. It, and a first edition of Virginia Wolfe’s Mrs Dalloway in its original dust jacket, realized the same price and topped the sale. Not far behind, with each earning $27,500, were first editions of Moby-Dick; or, The Whale and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Signed photos of sports figures, British royalty, and numerous other early presidential autographs made for a varied and interesting sale. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house; watch for a full report in an upcoming issue.
