PHILADELPHIA — As expected, Material Culture’s March 19 auction, Heart of the Collection, featuring American self-taught, Haitian, Jamaican and African art from the collections of Jonathan Demme and Ford Wheeler, was led by Hector Hyppolite’s oil on board “Bosou Toi Conne,” which brought $37,500, including the buyer’s premium.

The self-taught Haitian painter’s work is renowned and this painting was predicted to be a top lot in the sale.
