MARIETTA, PENN. — Much to the dismay of his legion of admirers, longtime Lancaster County antiques dealer Harry B. Hartman died suddenly on January 3, having barely rung in the new year. Born on July 1, 1930, Hartman operated establishments in eastern and central Pennsylvania before settling in Marietta nearly 50 years ago. First at the White Swan Tavern and later on East Front Street, his shop showcased his love of Pennsylvania folk art and his talent for creating compelling interiors.
Of his many gifts, perhaps none surpassed his capacity for friendship. Clients of many decades remember his warmth and bonhomie as well as the affection with which he nurtured their interests. His colleagues in the trade recall his generosity of spirit. Here at Antiques and The Arts Weekly, we will miss Hartman’s ready smile, easy laugh and ability to inspire and guide us. A tribute will follow in next week’s issue.
