CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sold USA.com, a subsidiary of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., ended a sporting collectibles auction on June 22 closing at 11 pm, EST. Online and phone-in bids were active, with items ranging from original artwork and shot shell boxes to sporting collectibles.
Highlights included a Laflin & Rand/ Iver Johnson dealer envelope, which featured a painted Indian on a horse on the front and advertising and postmark that dated 1903 on the back, selling for $869.
A rare Colt firearms pinback went for $2,757; there are only three known in the United States. A Peters Quick Shot 16-gauge shot shell box closed at $3,923 and a Winchester 1949 Factory Bullet Board has a winning bid of $5,789. The board is one of approximately 50 that were made circa 1949 for Winchester dealers who reached high levels of sales for the year 1949.
Top lot was a Henry rifle, which took the spotlight for a winning bid of $35,924, purchased by an Ohio collector. The rare Civil War inscribed firearm was marked on its sideplate “J.B. Hadlock, 58th Ind.” The barrel was marked with “Henry’s Patent. Oct. 16, 1860 / Manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. New Haven CT” in two lines, and the serial number 2212 could be found over the chamber.
The finish on the barrel was an overall even silver/gray, with normal handling marks, and no pitting. The rifle’s receiver and buttplate were an even mellow mustard color with some dings. There was a very old, light coat of varnish added to the stock that was not sanded. Missing, however, was the slide (elevator bar) on the rear sight leaf.
Hadlock was involved in the battle in the Battle Shiloh, the Siege at Corinth, and the battles of Nashville, Murfreesboro, Stone River, Chattanooga and Chickamauga.
