CAMDEN, S.C. — Horsepower — in two wonderfully varied forms — drove interest and high prices at Wooten & Wooten Auctioneers in its January 29 Winter Catalog Auction. The first lot out of the gate, and the sale’s top seller, was a 1969 Porsche 912 Targa with 53,000 original miles that raced to $45,000. It came from the collection of a private South Carolina gentleman and was bid on by interested collectors across the country from Rhode Island to Dallas to Charlotte N.C. When all was said and done it went to a collector from Rock Hill, S.C. Jeremy Wooten said “these air cooled classic Porsches are works of art in their own right; 1969 is one of the most desirable 912 Targas of all time. The market continues to climb on these cars and originality goes a very long ways with purists. This car is a very nice example of one a client can buy and enjoy on the road and in the garage.”
Wooten also noted that one of the finest horse portraits he’s ever worked with also outperformed expectations. “The Flying Dutchman” by Harry “Henry” Hall (British, 1815-1882) was being offered on behalf of a private Atlanta collection; it brought $7,200 from a sporting collector, underbid by a prominent South Carolina family that owns a midlands plantation.
Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a future issue will feature a sale review.
