BOONTON, N.J. — Biannually, Millea Bros conducts a three day “Select” auction: one of the firm’s two flagship sales. The December iteration, spanning from December 4-6, offered more than 1,000 lots separated into three broad groupings based on items’ similarities. The lot which led the entire sale was sold on day three, which focused on Continental art and antiques, carpets, antiquities and tribal art from various well-known collections, including those of Laura Pels (River House, New York City) and Karl Stirner, as well as deaccessioned pieces from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. An unnamed ink wash on paper illustrated by one of the followers of Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) made $32,500, including buyer’s premium. Unofficially titled “Study of a Seated Scholar,” the work, dated to the Eighteenth or Nineteenth Century, also featured an incomplete figural sketch on its reverse, which contained indistinct markings. According to catalog notes, it seemed to be signed “Rembrandt” on its lower left corner. Additional highlights from all three days of the flagship sale will be featured in an upcoming issue.
