NEW YORK CITY — The top lot at Doyle’s American paintings, furniture and decorative arts auction April 5 was James Edward Buttersworth’s portrait of The Phillip R. Paulding in New York Harbor with Castle Clinton in the distance. Estimated at $80/120,000, the work was the subject of competitive bidding that drove the final price to $250,000, including the buyer’s premium.
