SUDBURY, MASS. — Tremont Auction’s June 11 annual spring offering of more than 500 lots of Asian ceramics, bronze sculptures, carvings and artwork featured the large collection of Donald Snow comprising Japanese inro and netsuke. The sale was led by a pair of Japanese cloisonne vases that soared above the $6/8,000 estimate to finish at $51,240, including buyer’s premium. The Meiji period vases were attributed to Namikawa Sōsuke (1847-1910), a Japanese cloisonné artist known for innovations that developed cloisonné enamel into an artistic medium. They were purchased by an overseas phone bidder from the trade. There were many other surprises in this sale, which will be further reviewed in an upcoming issue.
