The Robert C. Eldred Company held its annual spring auction of fine Americana April 8‹ with great success. As expected, of the nearly 800 lots offered during the two days, the auction’s highlight was the rediscovered lost painting by a master of the Hudson River School.
“View of the Beach at Beverly, Massachusetts” by John Federick Kensett (American, 1816‱872) came from a private South Shore estate and will be included in the forthcoming Kensett catalogue raisonné. Conservatively estimated at $30/50,000, it ultimately sold for $310,500, including the 15 percent buyer’s premium, in the audience against some stiff phone competition.
