Jasper Johns’s “Corpse And Mirror II” will be on loan to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts June 27⁓eptember.
The loan of the seminal work from the Art Institute of Chicago offers an opportunity for a comparative study of three of the greats of Twentieth Century American art: Johns, Jackson Pollock and Sol LeWitt.
By seeing the Johns painting alongside the VMFA’s works by Pollock “Number 15,” 1948, ducco on paper, and LeWitt’s “Wavy Brushstrokes,” 1996, gouache on paper, viewers will be able to explore direct lines of influence, the three artists’ use of a palette of primary colors plus black and white, and the spontaneous gesture versus systematic structure in their art.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is on the Boulevard at Grove Avenue. For more information, 804-340-1400 or www.vmfa.museum .
