CHICAGO, ILL. — Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ September 11–12 jewelry auction offered an array of antique highlights, colored stones and signed jewelry. The sale totaled $4.5 million, with the top five lots being impressive diamonds and colored stones.
Colored stones proved strong in the market. The top selling lot was a fine 6.40 carat antique cushion cut Kashmir sapphire that sold for $473,000 against a presale estimate of $225/250,000. It sold to an international private collector after competitive phone bidding. Additionally, a fine 4.01 carat cushion cut Brazilian Paraiba tourmaline soared over it $40/60,000 estimate to fetch $149,000.
A Tiffany & Co. platinum and diamond ring sold for $185,000 and an important platinum and diamond graduated line necklace sold for $167,000, both against presale estimates of $100/120,000.
Signed diamond rings by Graff and Tiffany outperformed expectations. One example being a platinum, yellow gold, fancy yellow diamond and diamond ring, Graff, which sold for $161,000 ($130/150,000).
