MONROVIA, CALIF. — John Moran’s Art of the American West auction on September 12 was comprised of nearly 500 lots, featuring fine American paintings dating from the Nineteenth Century, historic and contemporary Pueblo pottery, Navajo textiles, bronzes, Southwest jewelry and more. Rising high above its peers was “Half Dome” by Thomas Kinkade (1958-2012), which was bid to $11,250 ($3/5,000). Rendered in oil on canvas and laid to Masonite, this painterly landscape is unlike the fantastical creations and subsequent reproductions from Kinkade’s eponymous studios. Made in 1990, the image’s color palette is muted but realistic in comparison to his other work, reducing rare human figures to brushstrokes beneath the Half Dome’s Glacier Point summit in Yosemite National Park, Calif. More on this and other successful lots to follow.
