SARASOTA, FLA. — Rising well beyond estimates in Amero Auctions’ March 22 Spectacular Spring Sale, which featured 448 lots of art, design, glass, jewelry and more, was a carved marble bust by Edmonia Mary “Wildfire” Lewis (American/Ojibwe, 1844-1907). The bust, titled “Young Octavian,” depicted Octavian/Augustus, the adopted heir of Julius Caesar and was signed “Copied by E. Lewis, Roma, 1870.” The white marble sculpture measured 16 inches tall by 12 inches wide by 10 inches deep and had no socle. Besting its $5/8,000 estimate, “Young Octavian” ruled the sale at $36,600, including buyer’s premium. A more complete review of the auction will run in a future issue.
