ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The 350-lot collection of Jean and Jim Barrow was the second day of sales May 19-20 at Brunk Auctions, kicked off by a 377-lot Premier Auction. Achieving the highest price of the two-day event was Roy Lichtenstein’s (American, 1923-1997) “Setting Sun and Sea,” a blue and white porcelain enamel on steel composition made in 1964. The 36-by-72-inch piece had been exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1964, in an exhibition of Lichtenstein’s landscapes. It was also included in M.L. Corlett and R.E. Fine’s online catalogue raisonné, and two articles on Lichtenstein by Donald Judd and Jill Johnston. The Barrows had acquired the painting privately from Sotheby’s New York in 2002, when they paid $150,000 for it. Carrying an estimate of $200/300,000, the painting sold for $479,700, including buyer’s premium. A more extensive review of both sales will run in an upcoming issue.
