DOWNINGTOWN, PENN. — A watercolor and sepia wash scene of fishing boats on a Brighton beach by British painter John Constable (1776-1837) was the star of Pook & Pook’s two-day Americana and International auction on October 5-6. Measuring 6½ by 9¾ inches, the work had provenance to a Delaware estate and Sir Bruce Ingram (1877-1963), a prominent publisher and philanthropist whose collection was sold at Sotheby’s London in 1965; an essay for the lot noted the work sold then for £140. According to Deirdre Pook Magarelli, Pook’s president, “There was lots of interest in the lot leading up to the auction. We had several absentee bids. The battle waged on between bidding platforms, but ultimately, a phone bidder jumped in and won it in the end.” It achieved $93,750, including buyer’s premium.
