The New York Public Library recently announced that it has acquired for its Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts the archive of Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway photographs taken by former Vassar College official Dixie Sheridan.
“Dixie Sheridan’s photographs fill a vital gap in the documentation of New York theater history, joining the Billy Rose Theatre Division’s photographic collections of the White Studio, Vandamm Studio, Friedman-Abeles and Kenn Duncan,” explained the New York Public Library in its announcement.
“Noted for her unique relationships with her subjects and a talent for capturing the theatrical moment, Dixie Sheridan’s collection will be a valued addition to the holdings of the New York Public Library,” the announcement continued. “This will be the first acquisition of an important photographer’s work that extends into the Twenty-First Century.”
The Sheridan photograph collection will join the library’s archives of such noted theatrical personalities as Katharine Hepburn, Lillian Gish, Katharine Cornell, Gypsy Rose Lee and Edward Albee. Moreover, the Sheridan archive will continue to accrue as she continues her theater projects.
