ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Nine phone bidders, competing against interest on two online platforms in Michaan’s Auctions April 15 Fine Asian Art sale, helped send a Sino Tibetan carved and lacquered seated Buddha to $69,850, nearly 90 times its high estimate. Seated in dhyanasana with his left hand in varada mudra and wearing a simple loose robe open at the front, the 13½-inch-tall figure had been discovered in a Bay Area estate and was painted on the bottom in iron red. One internet buyer, bidding on LiveAuctioneers, prevailed. It was the highest price achieved in a 192-lot sale that, alongside an April Gallery Auction on April 16, saw a total of 806 lots cross the block. Other sale highlights, which will be discussed in a future issue, included Renaissance Revival and Aesthetic Movement furniture. Prices include the buyer’s premium.
