SANTA FE, N.M — A Mimbres black-on-white bowl led Taos Auction Company’s spring sale of Native American, Pre-Columbian, Tribal and fine art on April 2. Estimated at $4/6,000, the circa 1000-1130 CE hand-coiled bowl made $30,000. Having a rounded base and gently flaring rim, the bowl featured painted decoration of two rabbits around a central kill hole. Kill holes, common to Mimbres pottery in the Southwest, were thought to be made to release the spirit when the bowls were placed at gravesites. A complete report on the auction will appear in an upcoming issue.
