PHILADELPHIA — All but nine of the paintings offered in Freeman’s European Art and Old Masters auction sold on July 18, a sale that achieved a total of $572,418 with a sell-through rate of nearly 90 percent. Taking top-lot honors at $176,400 was Carl Moll’s (Austrian, 1861-1945) ‘Venedig, Zattere (Venice),” an oil on panel composition painted in 1926 after the artist and his wife traveled extensively to Italy and France. Described in the catalog as “channeling both the art of Cezanne and Matisse,” the lot’s $60/100,000 estimate spurred extensive competition, additionally driven by provenance to a 1926 exhibition in Vienna and publication in the artist’s catalogue raisonné. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. Watch for a more comprehensive review in a forthcoming issue.
