WOODBURY, CONN. — On May 23, Schwenke Auctioneers conducted an estates auction of Muriel Gantz, Greenwich, Conn., and other consignors, with more than 650 lots of American and English furniture and decor, European porcelain, fine art and folk art, an exceptional group of early brass and a collection of miniatures. Gantz and her late husband, John, were notable collectors who began frequenting major antiques shows in the 1960s. However, the top lot did not come from their collection, but rather from that of Richard Green, London; an oil on canvas painting showing an older man surrounded by the contents of his cabinet, reading a statement, titled “Overdrawn at the Bank” by Charles Spencelayh (British, 1865-1958). Spencelayh was a founding member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, which is demonstrated in the minute details of the painting that measures only 24 by 20 inches. It was bid to $32,250. More on this and other top lots to follow.
