BELLOWS FALLS, VT. — Augusta Auctions celebrated the Valentine’s Day holiday on February 14 with its Vintage For Valentines auction, offering 240 lots, including new-to-market selections from the Ohio State Historic Costumes & Textiles Collection, the Valentine Museum and other private collections. Sweeping to the top of the auction was a half mourning chiffon gown with circa 1860s chantilly lace from Charles Worth, Paris, that achieved $20,625. Following the all-black attire of deep mourning that lasted for about a year for women, half mourning colors included gray, white and mauve. This gown was an example of the highest end of mourning wear available during the mid-Nineteenth Century, adding to its desirability for bidders. Price quoted with buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house; more on this sale in an upcoming issue.
