On May 28, a bronze signed Raphael Lagneau D’apres by Gorham was reported stolen from the Garage Antiques Market on West 25th Street.
The 10-inch-high bronze of Mary holding the infant Jesus above her head was stolen from Andrij Roman Antiques’ booth while the owner had his back turned. The owner said he was hanging a piece of artwork on the wall to fill the space made available by the sale of a painting that morning. The bronze had been purchased at Mark Vail’s onsite auction, which was conducted at the Dominican Sisters of Hope in Newburgh, N.Y., on May 7.
