LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. — David Rago offered nearly 150 lots in his February 28 sale of The Ellison Collection, which realized $1.96 million and was led at $107,100 by an “exceptional and tall pitcher” by George Ohr (1857-1918). Standing just 8¾ inches tall and demonstrating a feathered orange and sponged blue over pink glaze, the piece had been published in two books Robert Ellison wrote on the potter: The Mad Potter of Biloxi: The Art & Life of George E. Ohr (Garth Clark, Robert Ellison, and Eugene Hecht, 1989) and George Ohr, Art Potter: The Apostle of Individuality (2006). One of 20 works in the sale by the artist, and estimated at $20/30,000, it sold to a private collector and set the second highest auction result ever realized for Ohr’s work. A more extensive review of this sale will appear in a future issue.
