This pair is the first in a series of works that incorporate the 16th century British watercolors of John White documenting Virginia Indians and natural history. Butterfly Skulls are an intimate portrait of our shared human experience as well as a 21st century expression of man’s role in sustaining the environment on which we depend. Historically memento mori were often placed in cabinets of curiosity along with natural phenomenon to evoke contemplation of our temporal existence. Here the butterfly is made whole by the coupling of porcelain skulls evoking fragility and endurance, loss and renewal the cycle of life. H 8” W 12” D 6”, $6500.00
