Russell Pinxt., N. York, 1857" verso, canvas dimensions "25 x 30" and "Prepared by Ed.wd Dechaux, New York" stenciled along bottom margin of canvas verso, frame rubbing, at least two small punctures LL, black lighting reveals retouching around figure's bonnet and ribbons as well as areas surrounding her hands, craquelure noticeably to face, minor paint loss to left hand, frame with isolated loss and detached fragments included, some splitting especially at top, ss: 29" h. at highest point x 24 1/8" w.; and John Bayard (American, 1799-1857), 1857, oil on canvas depicting middle aged gentleman in black coat and burgundy waistcoat seated at table, no visible signature, paint inscribed "M.B. Russell Pinxt., New York, 1857" verso, with hand-written index card identifying couple separated from frame but included, small puncture LC, black lighting reveals retouching around figure's right shoulder, elbow as well as cravat and shirt front, isolated paint flaking, craquelure, frame with minor scattered loss, ss: 29" h. at highest point x 24 1/8" w., neither examined out of matching painted frames which appear to be partial inner liners from original larger frames.
