Lot 180 - Philip Leslie Hale (American, 1865-1931), attribution based on provenance, museum label verso, and appraisal from Brown & Corbin Fine Art, "Study for Rape of Europa, or, Centaur & Nymph", pastel on sand-textured cardboard, mythological scene depicting nude nymph leaning back against charging centaur, nymph's left arm elegantly outstretched towards red and purple draperies in background, no visible signature, "Expositions Universelles, 1855-1900" partially legible stamp on cardboard verso, museum deaccession label with 1996 handwritten conservation notes on foam core verso, minor UR corner tear, flaking and uneven upper border, two small abrasions UL, vertical mark (possible scuff) LL corner running through torso of nymph, expected wear to two-toned frame, matted and framed behind glass, examined out of frame, ss: 22 3/8" h. x 25 ¾" w.
