Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) American, New England and New York State Portrait of a Young Woman Seated on a Painted Chair Ca. 1829-1838. Oil on canvas 35" x 31" 37 1/2" x 31 1/2" framed This elegant portrait of a young woman was most likely painted during the period of Phillips' career known as the Kent Period. This example is among a small group of portraits where the artist portrays the sitters with exaggerated , elongated necklines while posed in a graceful manner. The sitter seen here is also adorned with beautiful earrings and a pendant, dressed in elegant attire, and seated in a paint decorated chair which are features associated with the Kent Period as well. The posturing of the hands and how she is seated in the chair adds to her graceful manner. Condition: Lined, very minor scattered in-painting. (see full condition re-port).
