Autumn Equinox- Price Upon Request
Autumn Equinox Tapestry, after designs by Rene Fumeron, French c1950s, Signed by artist and workshop. Made at the Pinton workshops, signed. A unique piece. 13’7” height (415cm) : 16’6” width (504cm) Fumeron’s first work was woven at Aubusson, France in 1952, other tapestries by him were later woven at the Gobelins, Paris. The Mobilier National in Paris has in its collection, a Fumeron tapestry entitled Avant l’Homme of 1959, the present tapestry has certain resemblance in design. The Pinton workshops in Aubusson under the control of Francois, made numerous tapestries with designs created by respected artistes of the period, Leger, Miro, Chagall, Le Corbusier and Vassarely to name but a few, most of these artists supplied designs after their original paintings which detract from the originals. Fumeron Can be considered a true tapestry designer. British artists also supplied the Pinton workshops with designs for tapestry, the most notable being John Piper for Chichester Cathedral and Graham Sutherland for Coventry Cathedral. Unlike most Modern Masters tapestries which are produced in a series of numbers, the present tapestry is a unique piece, commissioned for a private collector. We are attracted to Fumeron’s use of colour, especially in the bark of the silver birch trees and the monumental character of the tapestry heightens the illusion and presence of the piece.
