Lakota Catlinite Pipe Bowl, Late Nineteenth Century- Price Upon Request
A Lakota catlinite pipe bowl, carved sometime in the late Nineteenth Century. Though this pipe bowl was most likely made for non-Native consumption, the Lakota carver nevertheless imbued the horse with a magical quality. This horse is not an animal simply used for transportation and labor. This horse flies. Through the Native carver’s skill and vision, you can hear this horse’s thundering hoofs and feel his hot, snorting breath. There is a sense of total freedom as the horse leaps into the supernatural.
