Portrait of Anna Newton Coleman Hawley, oil, attributed to Edward Sheffield Bartholomew (American, 1822-1858) based on plaque and family diary, depicts young girl in white dress seated in green landscape with valley and mountain range in background, gold gilt frame with ornamental details in corners, paper label on reverse reads: "Portrait of Anne Newton Coleman Hawley painted by Edward Sheffield Bartholomew who afterwards became a... ", relined, wear consistent with age and use including small paint loss in bush and skirt, craquelure, areas of restoration in sky, ss: 39 1/2" h. x 32 1/2" w. frame size: 50 1/2" h. x 42" w. x 3 1/2" d. [PROVENANCE: Copies available of pages from 1904 family diary entry that the sitter is the daughter of Philo Slocum Newton (born March 29th, 1811 in Franklin, MA, and died May 2nd, 1891 in Hartford) and Elizabeth Anne Pelton Newton (born 1822 in Wethersfield, CT, and died in 1911). Given to the sitter, Anna Hawley, by mother Elizabeth Newton in 1897, and then owned by current family member.][NOTE: Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT, has fifteen sculptures and reliefs by Edward Sheffield Bartholomew and The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns one relief, according to family diary he "first attempted Portrait Painting as a vocation, found he was 'Color blind' and later became a noted sculptor".]
