Joseph Oriel Eaton (1829-1875), Untitled (portrait of woman), oil, 1862, oval gilded frame, dated and signed with monogram "J. O. Eaton" center right, depicts bust portrait of woman with period hairstyle curled brown hair to shoulders, wearing a white lace lined dress with a grey semi-silken brocade shrug, labels on reverse reads "Joseph Oriel Eaton (1829-1875) Portrait, genre, and landscape painter. Born in Newark (Ohio), Feb 8, 1829. He studied in NYC but worked mainly in the Midwest. He was in Indianapolis (Ind.) 1846-48; in Cincinnati, 1850, 1853, 1857-60; and in New Orleans before 1857. During the latter part of his career he was a successful painter of children's portraits in NYC and an Associate of the National Academy. He died at his home in Yonkers, (N.Y.) February 7, 1875. [from] The New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860", varnished, wear consistent with age and use including light inpainting to hair and cheek, older molded and gilded frame with label for Cincinnati frame shop/maker intact on reverse, repairs made to frame, piece is secured in frame with new and old hardware, currently backed with foam core, ss: 29 1/2" x 24 1/2", frame size: 39" h. x 34" w.
