Louis de Schryver (Paris, France 1862 - 1942) Le marchand de fleurs, Paris Oil on canvas Signed lower right 19 ¾ inches x 25 ½ inches / 50.16 x 64.77 cm Provenance: Private Collection, United Kingdom The artist was born in Paris and was of Belgian descent. Although becoming an artist was not favoured by his father, he studied with Gabriel- Joseph-Marie-Augustin Ferrier, and débuted, at the age of thirteen years, in the Salon of 1876, with two works, both, canvases of flowers. He was a member of the Society of the Salon from 1896 and it was there that he obtained an honourable mention and again in 1886 and 1889. Another was to be gained at the Universal Exposition, to be followed once again in 1891 and 1896. The artist also received a monetary award at the Universal Exposition of 1900. His many accomplishments included an honourable mention to l' Universal exposition of Sydney, in 1879 and he was named honorary member of the Society of Arts of Canada (Montréal) in 1893. At a very young age his style of painting would assure him a long period of success. These works would include scenes of Parisian streets around 1900. They were mixed with the urban landscapes of the city together with charming women in fashionable attire and flower sellers of the street. In another type of genre, de Schryver equally devoted his painting skill to the beginning of what would become the epic of automobile races of the period. His fascination by the speed of the first racing cars, brought him together with Zwillet and Carolus-Duran. It was together that they created the fine arts section of the automobile club of Paris. Ten years later and the artist returned to painting his Parisian scenes. In 1919 he went on a mission as cultural observer in Rhénanie after the war; it is there that he painted landscapes, still lifes and patriotic canvases (The Flag, museum of l' Army, Paris), which he sent to the Salon
