CRANSTON, R.I. — Bruneau & Co presented 150 lots from the Illustration Art Collection of Carl Pugliese on October 14, with all but three lots gaveling down successfully. Leading the charge at $95,000 was “Death of Montcalm” by Howard Pyle, an oil on canvas composition that depicted the mounted French General Montcalm coming through the St Louis gate into Quebec, Canada. Measuring 22-3/8 by 13¼ inches in a 31½-by-22¼-inch frame, the painting had carried an estimate of $5/8,000 and was one of seven works by the artist in the sale. Other top lots were a painting depicting Chinese solders, painted by Tom Lovell for True Magazine, and J.C. Leyendecker’s original artwork for “Peeling Apples,” which was painted for the Thanksgiving 1925 cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. A more extensive sale recap will appear in a future issue.
