NEW YORK CITY — On January 24, Bonhams presented Cohen & Cohen: 50 Years of Chinese Export Porcelain, an auction of 155 lots from dealers Michael and Ewa Cohen. Chinese export porcelain appeals to collectors because of its unique fusion between two cultures; those who produced it and for whom it was produced. The highest achieving of these was a very rare famille rose bowl from the Qianlong period (circa 1787-88), showing Western waterfront trading houses at Canton (Guangzhou) with their flags of origin flying. The bowl, referred to in the catalog as “United States at Canton,” was acquired by Colonial Williamsburg for $138,975, with funds provided by The Joseph H. and June S. Hennage Acquisitions Fund. More on this and other top sales in an issue to follow.
