Two highlights that dominated Christie’s September 20 sale of fine Chinese ceramics and works of art – a rare Fourteenth Century painting by Wang Meng, “Fishing in Green Depths,” and a sublime Persian-inscribed Sixteenth Century vase. Each of the works of art achieved $1,696,000. The sale broke all previous records in the field, totaling $14.5 million, the highest result ever for a various-owner sale of Chinese art in New York. Theow Tow, deputy chairman and international director, Chinese art, said, “The sale continued the upward movement that has characterized the Chinese art market for the past seasons. Not only did the auction realize the highest total ever for a various-owner sale of Chinese art in New York, it also further underlined the extraordinary inter-nationalization of the art market.” A complete review will appear in a future issue.
