“Yacht Race in New York Harbor” by James E. Buttersworth sold for $161,000 at the December 10 sale at Grogan & Company. The picture depicts a race between the Christine and the Iola. It had languished in the attic of a South Carolina estate for 20 years before a family member rescued it minutes before it was to be sent to the dump. The painting sold to a dealer in the room.
A preening shorebird carved by Anthony Elmer Crowell brought $46,000. It came from the Constance S. Crowell Trust.
