The River Stone Antiques and Design Center opened at with more than 40 dealers exhibiting quality antiques and decorative accessories in a 10,000-square-foot space at 37 West Broad Street. Martin Greenstein, executive director of the antiques and design center, sees a growing need for just such a space in Rockland County, noting, “Haverstraw is a charming river town that is emerging as a wonderful place to live, work and do business and we felt that there was a tremendous opportunity to be a part of its renaissance.” The center has formal room settings with antiques andshowcases for collectibles. There is another 10,000 square feet ofspace that will be used for special events including auctions, lectures and antique appraisals. The antique center is in The Stone Building, an historic Haverstraw structure built in 1923 and originally operated by Spiwak and Sons, a sheepskin coat manufacturer. Greenstein has worked with architects and designers to create what he feels will be one of the finest antique centers in the Northeast. The Village of Haverstraw is in the midst of a massive revitalization process, spearheaded by Harbors at Haverstraw, a $500 million Ginsburg Development, LLC project that will bring 850 luxury homes and a 11/2-mile continuous promenade along the village’s shoreline. Construction began in 2004 and will continue in several phases over a ten-year period. There has been a significant change in the housing market in Rockland and Greenstein feels that there is a growing need for those upscale home owners who are looking for quality antiques and home décor in the area. The redevelopment of the shoreline has served as a catalystin the aesthetic improvement of Haverstraw’s downtown region. Manyof the quaint storefronts that line the main business strip of thevillage have undergone exterior upgrades in recent months with moreto come.
