MANCHESTER, N.H. – As painted by George Lethbridge Saunders (1774-1846), the winsome Susan Coombs Dana (b. 1817) set hearts aflutter at Willis Henry Auction’s debut appearance at Manchester’s Radisson Center of New Hampshire on August 1-2. Signed and dated 1845, the cased portrait miniature measuring 5 ½ by 4 ½ inches unleashed a volley of bidding before selling to an Internet bidder for $19,200 including premium against its $1/2,000 estimate. Born in England, the itinerant Saunders was active along the US’s East Coast by around 1840. The miniature was found in a church rectory in Stockbridge, Mass. A complete report will follow in Antiques and The Arts Weekly.
