WOODBURY, CONN. — On May 21, Schwenke Auctioneers marked its 15th anniversary by offering more than 650 lots from estates and consignors in New York and Connecticut. Included in the sale were American folk art and country furniture from several Litchfield County estates and several Chinese porcelain wares from a New York collector, including a signed Chinese blue and white porcelain dragon vase that blew away its $200/400 estimate to sell for $8,125 to an internet bidder. Featuring five-toed dragons and pearls, the vase stood 17-7/8 inches high, with a 6½-inch diameter.
The sale was broadcast live on LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable. Absentee and phone bidding were also available. American furniture and decorations found favor. The second-highest selling lot in the sale was a pair of New York Chippendale carved mahogany side chairs. They featured the so-called “tassleback” design, related to known examples owned by the Van Rennselaer family. The two were from a group of five chairs offered as two pair and one single chair. All five chairs were purchased by the same internet bidder. With provenance to the Bulkeley family of Connecticut, the pair sold for $7,500.
Having previously sold at Stair Galleries in 2000, a rare pair of Albany carved and gilded convex mirrors was captured by a phone bidder for $6,250. Each mirror measured 65 inches high and 33 inches wide.
More Chinese porcelain performed as it crossed the block with a pair of polychrome lidded jars garnering $5,625 from an internet bidder. The pair, 13 inches high with a 7-inch diameter, had provenance to the estate of Theodora Gibson Berg.
A phone bidder was successful in securing a Connecticut cherrywood Queen Anne tray top tea table for $5,313. With provenance to a Connecticut charitable foundation, the table measured 27 inches high by 29 inches long by 19½ inches deep.
