NEW YORK CITY – A carved and painted eagle attributed to the Pennsylvania folk artist Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890) quadrupled low estimate to make a sensational $427,500 at Christie’s September 20 sale of Important Americana. The Nineteenth Century figure with outstretched wings led the session, which realized more than $2.5 million and saw aggressive bidding on Benjamin Franklin’s silver-hilted sword, $247,500, and a pair of Classical tables with eagle bases, $187,500.
