ALEXANDRIA, VA. — A seven-piece Japonesque silver and mixed metal tea set by Tiffany and Co., was the top lot of Potomack Company’s September 28 to October 4 six-day, 1,724-lot sale when it sold for $125,000. Circa 1870, four of the pieces — of the coffee pot, milk pitcher, two-handled covered sugar bowl, teapot, creamer, tray and hot water kettle — featured the hallmark “M” for Edward Moore, Tiffany’s jewelry design director and head of the silver workshops from 1851 to his death in 1891. This line dated to 1870-90 and sold to a private buyer. Potomack Company said they had 12 phone bidders vying for the lot, including both dealers and private collectors. The set came to sale from a private collection. Watch for a complete review in a forthcoming issue.
