PIKE, N.H. — Steenburgh Auctioneer’s May 21 sale included a collection of Shaker furniture, and small objects, as well as a collection of White Mountain paintings by Benjamin Champney and other artists. Leading the Shaker collection was an unusual two-drawer stand with documentation indicating it had been purchased between 1945 and 1950 directly from the Shaker community in Canterbury, N.H.; it sold for $6,900. One of the Champney paintings, “Ledges in North Conway,” earned $5,980. An important Eighteenth Century Concord, N.H., tall case clock that had once sold for $15,000 was one of two tall case clocks in the sale. In addition, there were quilts, early bottles, stoneware, copper lustre, jewelry and much more. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a full report will follow.
