NEW YORK CITY — On Tuesday, April 11, Sotheby’s sold Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals Game 2 Air Jordan 13s from the famous “The Last Dance” season — one of the most significant items from his renowned career and his final year with the Chicago Bulls — for $2.238 million, establishing a new world record for a pair of sneakers ever sold. The record-breaking result also marks the shoes as among the most expensive Michael Jordan items ever sold at auction, following Sotheby’s previous sale of Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey from the “Last Dance” season, which achieved $10.1 million in September 2022 and established a world record for any game-worn sports memorabilia.
The historic sneakers were worn during the most recognizable season of Jordan’s storied career, which helped secure his legacy as the greatest basketball player of all time. The season is referred to as “The Last Dance” — largely due to the smash-hit 2020 ESPN/Netflix documentary by the same name, which chronicled the Bulls efforts throughout the season, which was capped by a sixth NBA championship in eight seasons for Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
The shoes were presented in a single-lot online sale, kicking off the VICTORIAM sales series, a two-part online auction series featuring best-in-class sports memorabilia from iconic past and present athletes.
