The crowd was prepared as the two-day auction began March 17 at Preston Evan’s Opportunities Auction. The first day offered an array of classic jukeboxes that totaled at least 25. The demand for the colorful machines seemed to exhibit a pent-up desire by the group of bidders who fought over the offering. The most sought-after jukeboxes fetched bids in a range as high as $20/30,000. The crowd was equally excited by the offering a slot machines that seemed to never end as they were sold throughout the day. Many specialty items were gobbled up as they rapidly crossed the bock. The first day of the sale was an auctioneer’s dream in that the crowd was excited, and the offering was tremendous, said Preston Evans. The second day of auctioning produced even more excitement than the first. The auction catalog had described one item with some doubt as to its origin, a cabinet manufactured by the Mills Company around 1900. At least two bidders believed it to be worthy of a final bid of $66,000. An earlier sale of the star of the auction had already put the potential bidders on the edge of their seats as the auctioneer had finally eked out a slow and laborious bid from two contenders who fought to the finish for a Star Trade Register stimulator sold for $128,700.
