COPAKE, N.Y. — Copake Auction presented its 31st annual bicycle auction consisting of 930 lots on October 21. Bicycles and bicycle-related collectibles from around the country went under the hammer, raising $670,000. Lots came from the Lane Motor Museum and several private collections, including the Oregon collection of Ed Berry. A 1902 Steffey motor-bike rode away in top position at $30,000, surpassing its estimate of $20/25,000. Steffey Manufacturing Co in Philadelphia was known for producing motors and bicycle attachments in the early 1900s. Other top lots included multiple 1800s high wheel bicycles, a rare bamboo pneumatic safety bicycle, and a Gormully & Jeffery child’s two track tricycle. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. A more extensive sale recap will appear in a future issue.
